1971 Eastwood Public School Flute Band
I loved the Band. It consisted of Bb wooden school flutes, Eb wooden school flutes, concert flutes and a drum corps. Students began on the Bb flutes and progressed up to the Eb for the most skilled. Once a week Victor McMahon would visit the school to teach the seniors while I taught the juniors. I did some arrangements of modern songs and instructed the whole band in their complicated figure marching routines. They were amazing kids, so keen.
The band played at every school morning assembly for classes to march into school and were allowed to stay on and practice our music and figure marching for 10 minutes or so.
We looked forward to our annual performances around the Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park where all school flute bands in NSW competed. We also performed at local events like Anzac Day marches, shopping centre displays etc.
I do think some pupils joined the band just for these out of class perks and the cudos it brought and then quickly became enthused with their new skills.

It is a very rewarding occupation in many ways. It is wonderful to hear from past students with something that warms the heart.
