Haemachromatosis is a genetically inherited disease that results in the body storing iron in all parts of the body where iron shouldn"t be. Untreated , the result is always death by various locations of cancer, as the organs are filled with iron.
Females can be affected and die, but usually aren't. They carry the gene onto the next generation,

General Notes: "On 26 05.1842 John & Eliza Edwards sailed from London as assisted emigrants on the Thomas Harrison for Nelson New Zealand where they arrived on 25.10.1842. Also on board were Richard & Elizabeth Lloyd. They were the witnesses to John & Eliza's marriage. I believe Richard was probably Eliza's brother. Son Thomas was born in Nelson in about 1843. Apparently they did not stay long in New Zealand. According to the death certificate for Thomas he spent one year there. I believe they went to Chile. Son John is said on his death certificate to have been born at Valparaiso. All the certificates I have seen seem to have John as 2 years younger than Thomas, so born about 1845-1846. Son Edward is also said to have been born at Valparaiso or Chile on some of his certificates but this is not certain.
There is a strong probability that the family came to Sydney on the ship Emily which sailed from San Francisco on 4 April 1852, via Honolulu on 6 May, arriving at Sydney on 7 July 1852. The passenger list includes Mr J. Edwards Wife & 3 Sons & 1 Daughter. At that time the family definitely had 3 sons living - Thomas, John & Edward. They did have a daughter who died before 1860. John's death certificate says he had been about 39 years in NSW which is only one year out from the Emily arrival. On some of the certificates relating to son Edward he (Edward) is said to have been born in San Francisco or California. Edward was born about 1850. It is likely the family was in San Francisco at some time before the Emily's departure.
By 1860 the family was living at Waverley. The birth certificate of Robert David is very informative. From it (the only birth record of any of the children that I can find) come the details of his parent's marriage sufficient to identify it precisely, even though the year is wrong. The ages of each of his siblings are given & allowing a degree of scepticism as to their accuracy it permits tentative conclusions as to their years of birth; Thomas-1843-1844; John-1845-1846; Edward-1849-1850; Charles-1853-1854; Annie-1855-1856. It also shows that 2 boys & 1 girl were already deceased. I think the deceased daughter is the one who came to Sydney on the Emily. There is room for births between John & Edward & Edward & Charles so my guess is that 1 son was born & died in the Americas & 1 in NSW. Although John Edwards' death certificate records 3 male & 1 female children dead I think this is a mistake. The death certificate of Eliza records 2 male & 1 female deceased.
At his marriage John Edwards was a carpenter. He is described as a gardener in 1860 & 1863. In Sands directories he is described as an overseer of roads & municipal overseer, the first identification being at Vickery Street Waverley in 1870 & later at Carrington Street Waverley. I believe he worked for Waverley Council. " Information from family member, researcher IAN DODD.

Family stories from several distant branches all claim that William Lelliott sailed on the Cutty Sark. No documentation for this can be found yet. Even those at Cutty Sark in London (before the fire) were unable to find him mentioned in any of their records, although they don't claim to have complete crew lists for every voyage. --Ken
His headstone may have an inscription about the Cutty Sark, yet to be confirmed.
During the terrible "Maitland Gale" of May 1898, Captain Lelliott's ship, the schooner The Vale, was demasted whilst trying to reach the North Coast of NSW which relied on ships for food and provisions. He cut away the rigging himself and struggled on to his destination. He was awarded a commendation for this brave act, in the form of a scroll. Unspecified: Name derivation. Information from Rootsweb, Ken.
The name LELLIOTT is one derivative of the French name LELIET, which came from the Old French word Elie for the prophet's name Elijah or Elias.
The name has been changed and corrupted through the ages as various spellings have been added to the parish records. The spelling soon changed in the mid 16th Century to, among other variations, LELLYET, LELIOT and later to LILLIOT. Different spellings are encountered even within family units, which becomes understandable when one remembers that many of these family members did not read or write and the name was only recorded phonetically in many cases. The LELLIOTT spelling appears sporadically through the 1600's, 1700's and early 1800's and from there became more commonly used, although the other spellings have carried on through separate family lines. LELLYETT is still to be found in the USA, particularly in Nashville, Tennessee, and LILLIOTT is to be found in Florida and other locations.
The LLELLIOTT spelling came about because of a well-meaning person who suggested that the name should be spelt that way, believing it to be Welsh. The gentleman who received this erroneous information had his name changed to reflect this spelling and thus a family of LLELLIOTTs was create

The Richard Hannaford Story
" Richard Hannaford was born to Samuel & Elizabeth Hannaford at Dartmour, Devon, England in 1816. Elizabeth was born to James Rowe and Elizabeth Coleman and baptised at Lydford, Devon, England in 1821. She was the fifth child of their thirteen children. James parents, Mary (born 1761) and husband John Rowe (born 1762) were still alive but died in 1835, 1836 respectively both aged 74 yrs. James was a blacksmith and lived at Prince Tow, Devon. Richard and Elizabeth were married at Devonport, Devon on the 8th. April 1839. By 1834 Richards parents were dead when he sailed from Plymouth on board the ship " Lady Kennaway " arriving in Sydney on 12th Dec. 1854 with four children, James, Jane, Elizabeth and Henry. The family settled on a farm at Braidwood called Devon Farm. It was 216 acres. The farm was not fully worked as Richard was a builder - stonemason by trade. He built the Roman Catholic Churches at Braidwood and Cooma. He also built bridges over the Shoalhaven River and extensive additions to the original courthouse at Braidwood in 1864 costing 876 pounds and other work in the Braidwood district. Paperwork is all available in Sydney at State Records. Meanwhile in Somerset, England in 1840, John & Elizabeth (nee Timlet) Newton had a baby girl called Matilda, in a town called Wiveliscombe, where Matilda lived until she was eighteen yrs. old. Her older sister Elizabeth was living in Sydney and was married to a Mr. Hancock. It is believed that they returned to England and convinced Matilda and her younger brother Benjamin to come to Sydney. The records show Matilda arrived alone at Morton Bay, Queensland on board the " Alfred " on 24th Sept. 1858. She travelled to Sydney and married Edmund Sinclair Jermain, a builder, on 28th Dec. 1859 and settled in Goulburn NSW, and had two children. Elizabeth, born in 1860 and Matilda Newton in 1862 to 1948. Elizabeth married a Mr Glennie and lived in Melbourne. Matilda Newton Jermain married George Wilkinson Kershaw. During this period Richard and Elizabeth Hannaford had three more children, John (Jack) born 1856, Emaline born 1860 and Rosina born 1861 and died 1861. During their marriage they had eleven children, six only survived to adulthood Elizabeth Hannaford died in childbirth on Christmas Day 1863
We assume that as both Richard & Edmund were builders they could have known each other because in 1864 Matlida joined Richard on " Devon Farm " and had twelve children. Matilda died in 1921 leaving unmarried Edith to carry on " Devon Farm " but she was eventually unable to carry on even with the help of Dr. Barnardo Boys so she sold the farm to a local business family Nomchom. The farm was eventually bought back by the very progressive farmer Raymond Lawrence Hannaford Charles brother, Alfred's son who combined it with his fathers property "Pineview" ( a property of 176 acres next to "Devon Farm) and combined it with his own and now totalling over 4,000 acres and operating as the Hannaford Pastoral Co. " Meroo ". Raymond was married to Dorothy Clarke at St. Cecilias, Balgowlah on 11th Aug. 1945. They had three sons, Geoffery, Barry & Alan who since Raymonds death on 11th April 1982 have carried on the property " Meroo " William had a produce store at Chatswood on the site now occupied by Grace Bros and also a newsagency in Glebe. Father of Harrie S. Hannaford late President of Balmain Leagues Club. Richard was a baker in several country towns Arthur was in the police force at Bathurst Ada married Herbert James Kershaw and had six children. Herbert was a brother to George Wilkinson Kershaw who married Ada's half sister Matilda Newton Jermain. They were grandsons of George Kershaw and Selina Hirst, early Braidwood settlers and great friends of the Hannafords, both Elizabeth and Matilda's families. George Kershaw 1801 - 1978 witnessed Elizabeth Hannaford's death certificate. He was the great-great-grandfather to John Douglas Anthony - member Federal Government also great grandfather to Raymond Newton Kershaw (1898 - 1981) a Rhodes Scholar."" - From Lynette and Allan Shaphard.

Matilda, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Newton, was born in Wiveliscombe Devon, England where she lived until eighteen. Her sister Elizabeth had already emigrated to New South Wales, had married and was living in Sydney, thus it is likely that she sponsored Matilda's passage. Elizabeth (1860) and Matilda (1862). She married Richard Hannaford in Sydney in 1886 and she bore him a further 12 children. Thus, she had 14 children in all, 13 of whom survived to adulthood.

There are fine views across the bay to Pencarrow Head and Dodmans Point from the churchyard. A path leads down from the church to the totally unspoilt Lansallos Cove, where visitors can inspect a huge cleft in the cliffs cut by generations of farmers to enable seaweed to be carried on horseback from the beach to the surrounding fields.
